As in other parts of Italy, the first town conformation made of fortifications, towers and castles, that characterizes the municipalities of Montegabbione and S. Venanzo, dates back to the end of Roman Empire. To escape from the barbarian invasions from the fourth century onwards, the people went on the top of the hills where they built housesand fortifications towers and walls to defend themselve. When the barbarian invasions ended, fortresses and fortified villages not lost their reason to exist, on the contrary, some were abandoned, others became the piece of the local battles in prder to control an area of great strategic importance placed between Orvieto, Perugia and Todi .there were wars between municipalities, such as those between Orvieto and Perugia, disputes between families, such as the one between the Filippeschi and Monaldeschi, and factions, like Guelphs (supporters of the pope) and the Ghibellines (supporters of the Emperor).
