Poggio Aquilone – Civitella dei Conti

This ring will allow us to travel along three ancient roads: the one that from Poggio Aquilone led to Marsciano, part of the road between Civitella and San Venanzo and the direct connection between Poggio and Civitella.

We will also have the opportunity to see “la Rocca”, an ancient circular construction that probably served as a defensive watchtower for the castle of Civitella.

Immediately before the entrance climb to the ancient village of Poggio Aquilone, to the left, to the north and then immediately towards the east, we find a narrow entrance to a road in clear descent; it is the ancient road to Marsciano. We follow it always going east until we reach the river that we will go up to meet a ford on our left (north); we cross the Fersinone stream and we continue always following the dirt road. As soon as we come out of the woods, we take to the right (east); we will meet a gate (to be closed after the passage), we will reach and pass the ruins of Podere La Rocca. Going up again we will reach the edge of the forest.

If we want to go to visit the Rocca we have to take to the right, reach the clearing, skirt it leaving the forest on our right and in a short time we will reach this splendid ruin. We will go back along the same path; once we reach the point where we turned right, we continue straight downhill to the edge between the cultivated field and the wood (here the road is not very evident and with some shrubs). We reach a fence for cattle, which must be opened and closed again, and then follow an uphill dirt road, we pass an hunting post and we will reach a  gravel road that we will follow uphill.

We find a narrow asphalt road, which we take to the right (east) uphill. Civitella dei Conti awaits us, on the top of this hill, with a 360° panorama. We continue along the only road in front of us (or we enter the village and cross it).

We follow it until we have covered 5.67 km from the start; a small clearing on the right precedes a dirt road, always on the right (northeast), slightly downhill. We always follow it, until we will arrive in front of the Fersinone; on our left there is a bridge and, after passing it, we will continue on the gravel road, at the beginning on the plain and then uphill until we return to Poggio Aquilone.
